Auggie Tips: Ways To Stay Creative While WFH
Monday, Sep 14th, 2020
While our team has been successfully working from home for more than six months, we still miss the collaborative environment of our cozy offices that make creative ideas flow with ease. We asked our Associate Creative Director and Writer, Christine Coe, to spill her secrets on how to feed your creative spirit with outshining ideas while working remotely.
A day in the life of a creative professional working from home isn’t all that different than at the office. Well, except you might talk to yourself a bit more. Okay, a lot more. But you still have to stay in the rhythm of checking in with colleagues, which we do every morning. Then it’s off to the metaphorical races to get work done, meetings met and concepts concepted! Here are a few tricks I have up my pajama sleeve to stay creative:
Change Up Your Scenery
If you’re anything like me, you get bored of staying in one place and looking at the same ol’ thing. I have already moved my desk three times since we began working remotely. I also like to detach from my screen when I can and sit on the couch or outside with a notebook if I’m concepting. Of course, you can easily bring your laptop along too – pretty much anywhere you can connect to Wi-Fi.
Get Up From Your Desk
Seems simple enough but you’d be surprised how many days I’ve been just plugging along only to realize I haven’t gotten up from my desk or looked at anything else other than my computer for hours. Luckily, my Apple Watch is a failsafe – it has a “Stand Up” feature that goes off every hour. Taking that five-minute break is my go-to. How you spend those five minutes is up to you – dance like no one is watching, check in with your kids, give your pet some love, go outside and meditate, make a snack, check the mail (the real mail, not your email), – it doesn’t matter what you do, as long as it’s not on your computer, your phone or your iPad.
Make Time For Your Kid(s)
Don’t have any? Just sub this category in for your pet, your spouse or skip it altogether. Either way, the point is to not ignore them all day if they are home with you. The more they feel neglected, the more they’re going to bother you or have a tantrum. So, make sure you’re checking in with them throughout the day – pre-arrange activities, use your lunch break to get away from your desk and have it with them instead and let them know that when the workday is over, they will have your undivided attention. And mean it.
Take Advantage of Video/Talk Conferencing
It sounds like a no brainer but I find myself using chat or emailing when normally I would go talk to the person or pick up the phone if I was at the office. Most questions and clarifications can be made easier if you just hop on a quick video or phone call.
Have Fun with Zoom Backgrounds
Speaking of video chat, if you haven’t already discovered all the fun backgrounds that are available, it’s time to wake up and smell the coffee in your favorite TV sitcom’s kitchen, living room or bedroom! Or if your workspace isn’t up to par, just grab a fake one from your favorite home décor place like West Elm – you’ll be sure to be living the stylish good life in no time.
